Jeopardy Tournament

A team-vs-team Bible trivia game and tournament runner for youth nights.

What it is

A Jeopardy-style quiz for church youth events, built as a desktop app. Two teams take turns picking a tile, a host keys in their answer, and a wrong answer gives the other team a chance to steal. It can also run a whole tournament across several rooms, from round-robin groups to a final and a 3rd-place match.

Why I built it

Youth trivia nights needed something that looks like a real game show on the projector, runs smoothly in several rooms at once, and doesn't need a pile of phones or Wi-Fi to work. A host-driven desktop app with keyboard shortcuts keeps it simple and reliable, and the tournament mode means nobody has to work out the bracket by hand.

How it works

Simple, fair scoring

A tile is worth its row number × $100 × the round multiplier, so Round 2 doubles everything. A correct answer adds the full price. A wrong answer on a four-option question offers a steal: the other team gets 5 seconds and half the points (rounded down). Teams alternate picking after every question.

Made for a host at a keyboard

There's no buzzer: the host presses A to D for the team's answer. When the 30-second timer runs out the screen shows 'TIME'S UP!' with Space to reveal, T to allow a steal, or S to skip. The last 5 seconds tick, and a tied game goes to a tiebreaker question.

Sounds made in code

Every sound effect is synthesised with the Web Audio API instead of audio files: a rising C–E–G chime for correct, a low 200 Hz buzz for wrong, an 800 Hz tick, a falling sweep when time runs out, and a fanfare at the start of a round.

A tournament that runs itself

Teams play round-robin in groups, each game in its own room. Group winners skip ahead, everyone else plays a cross-seeded knockout, and each finished stage automatically creates the next (Round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals) up to the Final and a 3rd-place match.

Games you can carry between rooms

It ships as a desktop app (Electron). Question sets are saved as .jep files, a zip with a manifest and a checksum, so a game can be built once and copied safely to every room's computer.
